Hi, I find i have a hard down holding all of the strings with some of the open chords, specifically the higher ones. My fingers just aren't strong enough to keep them down for a long time. Is this a common problem and will I be able to improve upon it?

Yes, mute the low E with your thumb and only play the four middle strings, kind of like the feel of a C chord. That will start giving you the strength to play the full F chord when you are ready.
:)
